Think twice before you upgrade to Windows 10!

Windows 10 free upgrade

Windows 10 will launch on July 29th and Microsoft is currently promoting its new operating system.

It will be available as a free upgrade for most owners of Windows 7 and 8, as long as you certain requirements are met. Windows 10 is designed to run on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs meaning that your device is likely compatible and will run Windows 10.

The requirements are that:
  1. Your device is compatible
  2. You’re running genuine Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows 8.1 (Update).
See the full specifications here.

The Windows 10 Upgrade Notification

Microsoft have been promoting Windows 10 through a pop-up notification delivered to your computer via a Windows update. After a while, it begins to pop-up automatically.

Note that the pop-up notification which suggests you "reserve your copy" is just a way of getting Windows to pre-download the update little by little over the next several weeks. It's a good way of helping spread out the load on their servers against the big rush on launch day, but ignoring or disabling this notification won't make it any more difficult to get Windows 10 once you're ready for it.

The update may still be triggered manually at any time after the release.

The pop-up is known as KB 30335583 and can be hidden/removed if it's bothering you. We have pulled together the following resources to help.

Test your applications before upgrading

Holding off on the Windows 10 update does NOT mean you'll miss out and Myriad IT recommends that any organisation should test its enterprise applications prior to upgrading (which is what we will be doing too).

Windows 10 also includes a new Internet Explorer (rebranded Edge) so this may affect web applications. Applications we would recommend testing include:

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM
  • SharePoint
  • CRM Outlook plug-ins
  • QuickBooks (or other accounting application)
  • Virtual machines
  • Fonts & templates
  • Printers
  • JD Edwards (or other ERP)
  • Developers tools
